Canary Islands hauliers call for indefinite strike

The National Federation of Spanish Transport Associations (Fenadismer) has announced an indefinite strike by Canary Island hauliers from next Monday, 27 February. The measure is being carried out in protest against “the lack of response” from the regional government of the Canary Islands to the regulation of the use of the tachograph on the islands. According to the organisation, non-response from the Canary Islands government to its demand to make the use of the tachograph more flexible on the islands, taking into account their island characteristics, “has led Canary Islands hauliers to call an indefinite strike from Monday 27th February, which is expected to paralyse ports on all the islands”.

European regulations allow the use of the tachograph to be exempted for transport on islands with a surface area of less than 2,300 square kilometres, which would exempt all the Spanish islands with the exception of Mallorca. However, in reality, neither the Canary nor Balearic governments have so far asked the Spanish government to make use of this legal provision in their territorial areas. Fenadismer has emphasised that “it has not been proven that the obligation to use the tachograph in the islands prevents accidents or infringements, but only a collection effect due to the penalties that are usually imposed”.

The central government and the Canary Island hauliers are engaged in negotiations to try to find a solution to the conflict and avoid the indefinite strike called for next week.
